February 2008 | Ratings UpdateMadascar's sole passenger train, which serves as an economic lifeline for thousands of people living in isolated mountain villages, is at threat because it is not profitably run at present. The 163-kilometre Fianarantsoa-East Coast (FCE) line is one of only two rail lines in the country and is the only one with passenger cars. The government has reportedly promised to put the line out for tender, and interest has been shown by China and South Africa - but if it is not rescued, the possible increase in poverty among people dependent on the train for transport could raise the political
