The Right To Satire
February 2008 | Ratings UpdateWe have ticked up our long-term political risk rating to 56.0 from 55.6 on a court ruling which may indicate a change in media freedom. In January the Supreme Court overturned a deportation order for a British citizen living in Zambia who wrote a satirical article criticising the president, which is illegal in Zambia. The court ruled the deportation order unconstitutional and affirmed the author's right to create satirical pieces. The case was closely watched as a test case for the rights of journalists to criticise the government, and we have moved our media freedom rating for the country to
