October 2007 | Ratings UpdateThe Turkish government has come under increasing public pressure to launch a military operation into Iraq's northern region, from which an estimated 3,000 Kurdish separatist rebels have been staging cross-border attacks on Turkish strategic assets in recent months. Prospects of an incursion into northern Iraq grew following the recent parliamentary motion to approve a military operation into the Kurdish controlled region in Iraq, and have received a boost on Sunday October 21, following the largest insurgent attack on Turkey in at least a decade, leaving 17 Turkish soldiers dead. This commitment of troops to a relatively stable part of Iraq
