Headscarf Issue Rears Its Head Again
January 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe Turkish government is once again pushing forward on a bill to ease the country's headscarf ban in public institutions, a move likely to aggravate tensions between the ruling Justice and Development Party and secular institutions such as the military. While the bill has been amended to only ease the restrictions in universities, and only then for students who wear a headscarf that still reveals the whole face, the military has already made veiled comments asserting its opposition to the move.
