Iraqi forces took control of the Karbala province, a Shi'a region in the south, from US forces last week after the handover was delayed for nearly three months following fighting between rival militia factions. The news is a positive step for the Iraqi government which is trying to gain complete control of Iraq amid internal strife between rival forces. However, Karbala is only the eighth of Iraq's 18 provinces to revert to Iraqi control and the political situation remains fraught, with the country only scoring 23.3 in the security/external threats category of our
