Madagascar's Justice Minister Bakolalao Ramanandraibe has defended the death penalty, after 12 people were sentenced to death for murder and rebellion. The 12 were convicted over a dispute which began five years previously, when a businessman bought land 90km west of the capital for tourist development. In August 2006, police were dispatched from the capital to remove residents in the area, but they refused to move and two policemen were killed in the ensuing confrontation.
