A Vote Against Mbeki

Jacob Zuma's support over President Thabo Mbeki in the December election for ANC president has widened considerably with Zuma leading Mbeki 2,270 to 1,396 in the nomination vote on November 26. Although this puts Zuma in a strong position to win the ANC presidency, there is still the potential for a compromise candidate come December, especially as Zuma may be charged with corruption. As highlighted before, a Zuma presidency in 2009 could put some upside pressure on the country's fiscal deficit, but we do not expect any wide-ranging changes to economic policies.
