The much anticipated World Athletics Championships did not, fortunately, witness any domestic unrest in the host city of Mombassa on the eastern coast despite the cautions of potential extremist activity from the US embassy in Nairobi, and warnings of unspecified activity from the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya. The security precautions taken were warranted as there is genuine disaffection among the Muslim population in Kenya over perceived political marginalisation, alleged religious harassment under the pretext of the 'war on terror' and disagreement with the government's pro-US stance more generally.
