Toward the end of May the UN World Food Programme temporarily suspended aid to half a million people in the country's drought stricken north eastern Karamoja region after gunmen killed one of its drivers in an ambush. Inter-ethnic violence is common in this area and weapons are still rife. Indeed, recent violent clashes between the Ugandan army and heavily armed cattle rustlers illustrate the pent up tensions. Attempts to disarm pastoralists and curb raids by nomadic warriors are under way but made difficult by a steady flow of cheap weapons from the Horn of Africa.
