US Cracks The Whip
June 2007 | Risk SummaryAt the end of May the US ratcheted up sanctions against Sudan. The punitive actions included barring 31 Sudanese companies from doing business in the US. Moreover, economic sanctions were placed on four Sudanese individuals, including two senior officials and a rebel leader suspected of involvement in the turmoil in Darfur. On top of the sanctions, the US has also pushed for an expanded international arms embargo on Sudan. But whether unilateral pressure moves of this kind will yield the desired result is yet to be seen, as too provocative a stance is likely to undermine efforts at striking a compromise over peacekeeping troops in Darfur.
