Great Expectations For July Conference
June 2007 | Political Risk AnalysisSomalia's efforts to hold a national reconciliation conference in mid July will encourage high hopes that the war-torn country may at last be able to move towards establishing some semblance of security and stability. This would be atypical; the country has lacked a functioning government since 1991 and the intervening years have been characterised by inter-clan feuds, efforts by the Somaliland region to establish independence, the emergence of Islamist rebel factions and repeated foreign interventions. Given this history, hopes for national reconciliation must come from a necessarily low base.
