June 2007 | Ratings UpdateLosing presidential candidate and head of the main opposition Jeanne Pierre Bemba remains in Portugal. He flew there from the protection of the South African embassy in Kinshasa, where he had fled after his private army was routed by security forces in March. While advisers said that he could return by the end of July, they say this depends upon whether security guarantees are forthcoming. Such security guarantees appear unlikely, as Public Prosecutor Tshimanga Mukeba is continuing to press the Senate to revoke Bemba's constitutional immunity to face charges of threatening state security.
