July 2007 | Ratings UpdateThere is some tentative evidence that the police crackdown on the feared Mungiki sect is having some effect on overall levels of crime. According to police statistics, there were 4,410 reported incidents of crime recorded last month, down from just over 5,000 in May. The Mungiki are blamed for a significant proportion of crime in the country, particularly in Nairobi and the central provinces, and these figures will likely be used to justify the government's ongoing bid to reduce the sect's influence. We caution though that while levels of petty crime have been falling, violent crime has continued its upward
