Crackdown on Mungiki?

November 2007 | Ratings Update

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the police may have killed hundreds of people in a crackdown on Kenya's notorious Mungiki gang. The rights group said that 458 bodies were taken to Nairobi's main mortuary since June 2007 by a government-registered vehicle. This follows accusations earlier in 2007 from other organisations including Amnesty International for alleged execution-style killings. The police are strongly denying their involvement. The accusations could threaten the social stability element of Kenya's short-term political risk rating. The rating already faces risk to the upside due to the presidential elections.
