UN Darfur Malaise

The UN's most senior peacekeeping official, Jean Marie Guehenno, has expressed fears that its planned force for Darfur could experience "humiliation." His fears are partly based on the fact that member states have so far failed to provide 18 transport helicopters and 6 light tactical helicopters. Diplomats say that developed nations have been reluctant to commit these resources due to concerns about the leadership and command structure of the planned hybrid African Union-UN force. If this force were to fail, it could further embolden Sudan's already prickly behaviour toward permanent members of the UN Security
