CPDM Dominance Unlikely To Diminish
April 2007 | Market StrategyThe parliamentary elections slated for July 22 are unlikely to bring any major shifts to the current constellation of power. President Paul Biya, and his ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) who currently hold 148 out of 180 seats in parliament are likely to retain their dominance. Biya's near quarter of a century at the helm of the country, making him one of the longest serving leaders in Africa, does inevitably raise questions as to the country's democratic trajectory. At the 2004 presidential polls, which were criticised by human rights groups, he secured a landslide 70% of the country's votes.
