May 2007 | Ratings UpdateAlthough the April general elections fell far short of best practises, as reflected in a barrage of strongly worded criticism by both domestic and foreign observers, we deem it unlikely that the results will be annulled, as demanded by the opposition. Nonetheless we see potential for a raft of litigation, contesting the results. The recent increase in sabotage and kidnappings in the Niger-delta are connected to the May 29 transition, when President Obasanjo steps down. While further near-term turbulence cannot be ruled out, we expect the current crescendo of rebel activity to ease somewhat once the new administration has settled
