The first female Chief Justice of Ghana, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, was vetted in Parliament on June 1. Public interest was so strong - gender activists under several groupings attended in force - that the ceremony had to be moved from its usual venue (the Speakers' Conference Room) to Parliament House. If Justice Wood is approved, she will become the fourth most powerful person in the country. We see this as a positive reinforcement of Ghana's young democracy, and it is a significant step towards gender equality.
