Niger Delta - Lubricating The Cogs Of Negotiation

The drawn out impasse in the Niger Delta, which has brought Nigeria's oil production down by one quarter and sent ripples across global oil markets, has been subject to some mixed but mildly upbeat dynamics of late. Since President Umaru Yar'Adua was sworn in at the end of May, some 19 hostages have been released - from a number of militant groups - bringing the number of foreigners held by militants down to 20. Moreover, some rebel groups have declared a temporary truce, paving the way for deepened dialogue.
