Pre-Election Tensions Dominate

Sierra Leone faces elections in August 2007 which raise the real possibility of a democratic transfer of power. Long-term president Ahmad Tejan Kabbah's term of office ended in May 2007, although he is constitutionally permitted to remain in office until after the elections. Kabbah has dominated the country's political landscape since first coming to power in 1996, surviving the civil wars of the 1990s to eventually complete the maximum two terms in office.
