Unrest Surrounds Elections
June 2007 | Ratings UpdateThe pre-election period has been characterised by sporadic clashes between supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and the opposition People's Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC). However, these do not appear to indicate unrest on a national scale surrounding the elections, although we could well see outbreaks of violence on polling day. Moreover, the military has stated that it will not become involved in the elections, holding to its neutral stance. Given Sierra Leone's history of military interventions, this bodes well for the conduct of the elections in , holding to its neutral stance.
