September 2007 | Risk SummaryPresident Omar Bongo holds the distinction of being Africa's longest serving head of state, having ruled Gabon since 1967. He is not excessively heavy-handed, but the polity is not free either, and there are contrasting opinions on whether Bongo's political longevity is a factor for stability in a troubled region, or a barrier to democratic evolution. Most of the population seems relatively happy with the status quo, but wish for better living standards.
