Media Monopoly No More

The granting of the country's first private broadcasting licenses in late August, to three television channels and a radio station, is a milestone development for freedom of speech and richer political discussion going forward. It marks the end of the state monopoly, which has kept media output within very rigid (pro-government) parameters. Indeed, in their 2007 annual report Reporters Without Borders highlighted that the conditions for journalists in Cameroon are improving. Overall, we see the ridding of the monopoly as a real positive to the political environment going forward.
