October 2007 | Ratings UpdateBoth the 11 August and 8 September polls were judged largely free and fair by observers from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) electoral observer mission. Given that these were only the second polls since the end of the civil war and the first since the withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission in December 2005, this verdict is highly positive for the progress made in entrenching democratic systems in the country.
