Late October saw rebels in the Niger Delta return to action, kidnapping seven workers from an off-shore oilfield. As the first major attack since the inauguration of President Yar'Adua in May, it has raised serious fears that the nascent peace process could disintegrate, throwing into question the likelihood of the formal peace talks prepared for the end of the year. The catalyst behind the raid was reportedly the arrest in September of a prominent rebel leader, Henry Okah, in Angola.
