A presidential tribunal is reviewing President Yar'Adua's contested victory and Yar'Adua has vowed to honour the tribunal's decision. State tribunals have already dislodged four state governors from the ruling party, so a decision against Yar'Adua is possible. Should it occur, the best case is a free and fair election where one candidate wins a clear mandate - at worst the country enters prolonged uncertainty and a repeat episode of violence. Some say the case could reach a verdict by the end of the year, but previous contests have taken years to resolve and therefore the case could stretch into 2008
