February 2008 | Ratings UpdateA wave of protests over fuel price rises across Mozambique in February 2008 resulted in six deaths and more than 100 people being injured after police clashed with crowds of demonstrators. The government had proposed raising transport fares by 50%, but soon reversed the decision following violence and looting. In our view, this exhibits the threat to social stability stemming from poverty and inequality that still remains in Mozambique despite the rapid economic growth of recent years. The country scores an unimpressive 37.5 (out of 100) for social stability in our short-term economic risk
