President Denis Sassou Nguesso has stepped up a campaign against illegal arms in 2008. Since the beginning of civil war in 1997 the country has faced a major problem with illegal weapons - in 2005 a Swiss NGO estimated there were 34,000 illegal weapons in the country. Unexploded munitions like land mines are another major problem, with an estimated 0.26 square kilometres of capital city Brazzaville alone still harbouring unexploded arms.
