Strike Action Undermining Security

March 2008 | Ratings Update

On the back of the outbreak of violence at the end of February 2008, we have lowered our short-term political risk rating to 54.2 (out of 100) from our previous score of 59.2, with ongoing downside potential if the security situation worsens further. Considering that President Paul Biya appealed for dialogue in an effort to prevent a further deterioration in violence but refused to provide significant government support to reduce fuel and food costs, the risk of further strikes cannot be discounted in the short term.
