March 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe prime minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Thani, recently announced that Qatar would be unlikely to see its first ever parliamentary election this year as the government was still preparing the legal framework. Al-Thani noted that although it had already missed the 2007 target, the government wanted to ensure the election was 'right and to international standards'. When the elections take place, voters will be able to choose 30 of the 45 members of parliament, with the head of state appointing the rest.
