External Accounts Under Pressure

We forecast that South Africa's current account deficit will decline only marginally to 7.2% of GDP in 2008, as weaker external demand and high commodity prices will weigh on the trade balance. At the same time, higher risk aversion could pose a threat to the financing of the country's current account shortfall.
