April 2008 | Ratings UpdateMorocco's trade unions have rejected government proposals on changes to the minimum wage, claiming that they do not go far enough to compensate the rising cost of living. The state has proposed a 2.5% annual increase in the private sector minimum wage over the next four years (against a CPI reading of 3.2% y-o-y in March, and food price inflation of 5.5% y-o-y). The unions argue that without a larger wage hike, standards of living will fall. Although public disaffection with the proposals poses a risk to social stability, so too do unemployment and inflation, which could be adversely affected
