May 2008 | Ratings UpdateOn April 9 Zambian president Levy Mwanawasa called for an emergency summit of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to discuss the electoral delays in Zimbabwe, and on April 21, he asked countries in the region to turn away a Chinese ship carrying arms bound for Zimbabwe, despite the close ties Zambia and China share. These actions indicate an increased willingness to be critical of Zimbabwe - when Mwanawasa called Zimbabwe a 'sinking Titanic' earlier this year, he quickly softened this stance following pressure from other SADC leaders.
