May 2008 | Ratings UpdateAs we went to print, Kuwait's prime minister Nasser Muhammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah was on the verge of announcing his new cabinet, which looks set to be more representative than the last, after another resounding victory for the opposition. We do not expect any major policy changes, but the presence of Islamists and reformists in the cabinet (as well as in parliament) will increase political noise, and likely slow reforms further. Kuwait is in urgent need of economic reform in order to create long-term sustainable jobs for its indigenous workforce.
