May 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe UAE's Federal National Council (FNC) has recommended that a GCC-wide residency cap on expatriate workers, first proposed by Bahrain, be approved. The FNC's Interior and Defence Committee approved the plan to limit work visas for unskilled workers to a maximum of six years. After this point, unskilled workers (such as labourers, housemaids, farmers and herders) would be unable to renew their visas automatically; they would only be able to return to the Gulf by beginning the entire visa application process again. The idea is due to be discussed at the GCC summit in December but we expect strong lobbying
