A violent murder in Bahrain has spawned a backlash against Bangladeshi immigrants that could have serious political and economic implications for the Gulf Kingdom. Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah al-Khalifa issued an order on May 26 to immigration authorities to stop issuing work permits to Bangladeshi nationals, following the arrest of a migrant worker for the murder of a Bahraini citizen. The ministry then went a step further, banning the renewal of work permits for Bangladeshis already living in the Kingdom.
