The apparent political 'victory' of Hizbullah has brought relative calm and stability domestically, which is good news, but will do little for external security. Any sign that Hizbullah is in the ascendancy in Lebanon will not go down well with neighbouring Israel: former Israeli Defence Force chief of staff told Army Radio on Sunday: 'If an armed conflict erupts it will be simpler to strike Lebanon when Hizbullah is the legitimate ruler', while Vice Premier Haim Ramon told cabinet members that Lebanon must be viewed as a 'Hizbullah state' after the group seized control of parts of Beirut
