African National Congress (ANC) leader and likely future president of South Africa Jacob Zuma's trial for corruption is unlikely to begin as scheduled on August 4, because of procedural issues which need to be resolved. While this increases the likelihood that the trial will occur simultaneously with the 2009 general election, which will increase political instability over that period, in the short term it should further bolster Zuma's political influence in South Africa.
