Food Inflation Prompts Protests

Protests over sharp rises in food prices took place in late May in Kenya, prompting the police to fire teargas to disperse the crowds in Nairobi. One of the organisers of the protests said that 'the government must subsidise the cost of food, it is not fair for the poor to be suffering with high food prices yet the government has not increased salaries'. Nairobi's police chief Tito Kilonzi reportedly said that the demonstration was illegal and four people had been arrested.
