Security Collaboration With Malawi

The Mozambique-Malawi Joint Defence and Security Commission has met in Lilongwe to discuss ways of exercising effective control over the two countries' shared border. Not only is the largely unmonitored border frequently crossed by refugees fleeing the Great Lakes region, it is also a major smuggling route, particularly for sugar. As such, greater collaboration between the two countries would have significant security, political and economic benefits. Also discussed was the possibility of holding joint peace-keeping and humanitarian exercises with a view to domestic and regional deployment.
