SWAPO Credibility Challenged
June 2008 | Ratings UpdatePresident Hifikepunye Pohamba is coming under increased domestic pressure to sever diplomatic links with Zimbabwe. With ties between the two countries historically close, Pohamba has not hitherto spoken out against the actions of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, incurring the condemnation of the other Namibian political parties and NGOs. With the presidential election scheduled for 2009, such a silence form the ruling South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) is likely to damage the credibility of the liberation movement-turned political party that governed since independence in 1990. That said, the party's electoral dominance is unlikely to be seriously dented.
