Following the kidnapping of five Cameroonian soldiers and a local government official, hundreds of Nigerians left the Bakassi peninsula on June 13 and gathered in the town of Ikang, on the Nigerian side of the border. An estimated 90% of the Bakassi peninsula's population are Nigerian fishermen and their families. The migration has been spurred over fears that Cameroonian soldiers would strike the Nigerian population, in retaliation for the kidnapping, which they believe was conducted by Nigerian pirates.
