In mid-June, the Omani authorities announced that they would deport almost 3,500 Indian workers who had overstayed their visas. The Ministry of Manpower published a list of names of all the concerned workers, threatening them with fines and legal action if they did not cooperate with the authorities in their repatriation. The workers' sponsors will also face legal proceedings if found to be employing foreign workers not in possession of the correct visa documents. Oman's last amnesty for illegal workers took place in November 2007, when the government allowed several thousand Indians to leave the country without paying the usual
