June 2008 | Ratings UpdatePresident Levy Mwanawasa, current chairman of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), has stepped up his criticism of Zimbabwe. Speaking in his capacity as SADC chairman, Mwanawasa stated the elections should be postponed because the campaign fell 'far short' of the SADC principles and guidelines governing democratic elections. On June 25, Mwanawasa and AU president Jakaya Kikwete also attended a meeting with the SADC defence committee (comprised of representatives from Angola, Tanzania and Swaziland), to discuss the Zimbabwe crisis, notably without the participation of SADC's Zimbabwe mediator, South African President Thabo Mbeki.
