A New Mugabe Critic

Tanzania has stepped up its criticism of Zimbabwe, in contrast to its previous support for the country. Foreign Affairs minister Benard Membe stated on June 20 that he had 'evidence' the scheduled run-off election would not be free and fair and urged Zimbabwe's government to halt violence and allow election monitors to conduct their work without interference. The statement was subsequently endorsed by Tanzania's Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, Security and Defence. Jean Ping, chairman of the African Union Commission, also issued a statement criticising the Zimbabwe authorities, a statement which was made following consultation with African Union (AU) chairman
