June 2008 | Ratings UpdateAccording to official sources, five Cameroonian soldiers and one government official, all travelling by boat, were killed by pirates in the Bakassi peninsula on June 9. This represented the second incident in the area since November 2007, when unidentified attackers killed more than 20 Cameroonian soldiers. Although tensions have eased on a state level between Cameroon and Nigeria following the final demarcation of the maritime border in the Gulf of Guinea in March 2008, we maintain our view that the region is likely to remain volatile.
