Outlook Grim For AKP

The June 5 decision by Turkey's constitutional court to overturn a government initiative to allow the wearing of headscarves on university campuses supports our view that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will lose its case in an ongoing trial for alleged anti-secular activities. With the AKP likely to be banned as a result, early elections within 2008 can be expected, further prolonging the political uncertainty in Turkey for at least the next six to eight months.
