Turning Around Before Reaching The Summit
July 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe long-delayed summit between the government, the Niger Delta militias and other regional leaders, originally due to take place in June 2007, has been indefinitely suspended following the resignation of the summit's chief coordinator, Professor Ibrahim Gambari. We had warned that the resignation of Gambari would likely delay the summit by at least several months, and that even if a summit was convened, no clear solution to the conflict presents itself. With the summit called off now, the government plans to hold discussions with relevant Niger Delta leaders to seek solutions to the violence. We believe such a strategy is
