July 2008 | Ratings UpdateBahrain has lifted the ban on granting visas to Bangladeshi workers. The ban was imposed two months ago in the wake of an alleged murder of a Bahraini national by a Bangladeshi mechanic, which generated a considerable backlash against the community of guest workers. While some MPs called for the deportation of all Bangladeshis, this would have seriously damaged the island nation's economy and so a revocation of the visa ban is not unexpected. There are around 90,000 Bangladeshi workers in Bahrain out of a total population of just over one million, and most are employed in low-skill, low-pay fields
