July 2008 | Ratings UpdateMoroccan police have hailed a victory in their fight against the Kingdom's thriving illegal drugs trade. In a series of raids along the northern Moroccan coast, police seized more than 10 tonnes of hashish and cannabis leaves. Morocco was formerly the world's largest producer of hashish but the last four years have seen the government attempt to eradicate production. Harsh sentences have been handed down to producers and traders, and farmers have been encouraged to switch to other crops such as olives.
